So what exactly is Yin yoga? It is a more meditative approach with a physical focus much deeper than other type of yoga practices. Here the practitioner is trying to access the deeper tissues such as the connective tissue and fascia and many of the postures focus on areas that encompass a joint (hips, sacrum, spine). As one ages flexibility in the joints decreases and Yin yoga is a wonderful way to maintain that flexibility, something that for many don’t seem to be too concerned about until they notice it is gone.
Yin Yoga postures are more passive postures, mainly on the floor.
Yin Yoga is unique in that you are asked to relax in the posture, soften the muscle and move closer to the bone. Yin offers a much deeper access to the body. It is common to see postures held for three to five minutes, but in Yin yoga we held from 2-5 minutes even to 20 minutes at a time. The time spent in these postures is much like time spent in meditation, long and static holds enable us to access tension or feelings or emotions hiding in our deepest layers. The practice allows the body to drop down into the parasympathetic nervous system, and therefore becomes deeply healing and nourishing.
Yin yoga is a simple, quiet practice, but – make no mistake – it is not always an easy or comfortable one. One of the leading teachers of yin yoga, Bernie Clark, says: “Yin yoga is not meant to be comfortable; it will take you well outside your comfort zone. Much of the benefit of the practice will come from staying in this zone of discomfort, despite the mind’s urgent pleas to leave.”Therefore the more you practice, the more you will feel deeply connected to your own true essence.
Yin inspired yoga classes will offer you a much deeper access to the body,it's like an invitation to find your multilayered self.Yin yoga class will be practicing sitting or lying on the floor so expect a lot of relaxation this week.Another good news that there are no Warriors, no Triangles no core work,no dynamic movements,no downward dog :) and the pace is slow.
